Pinhole Pedallers

Exeter, United Kingdom
FUNDED

The Pinhole Pedallers will be touring the South West to give new views of the landscape through the mesmerising projections of a pinhole camera big enough to climb inside. Travelling solely by bicycle we will reach rugged coastlines, deserted moorlands and bustling cities to celebrate our land and look at it in a new way.

What's it all about?

Our aim is simple - to engage people with the landscape around them, and we will use creativity to do this. Having designed the camera, we are now in the early stages of building it and organising our hosts along the way. We have taken the project as far as possible but the need for funding is very real and so would be fantastic to have support to really make this happen. With your support we can build the camera - (and a trailer big enough to take it!) and cover the costs of staging the exciting exhibition.

Where we're rolling..

Our tour will wind though the South West and end at Lacock Abbey (the birthplace of British Photography) and we are truly passionate to get as many different communities and projects involved along the way. The feedback received so far has been really fantastic and there are already confirmed visits at The Centre for Contemporary Art and the Natural World, The Fox Talbot Museum & Sharpham Outdoors with many more in talks at the moment. Oh, and if you know of anywhere worthy of a visit just shout, might be able to squeeze a couple more venues in!

Why a giant camera?

I have been to be involved with a couple of big cameras - one whilst working as an artists assistant in London and more recently I designed one to be used on Sharpham Estate for the benefit of visitors and as an educational aid. I now realise their great potential - they are quite magical spaces that really make you see things differently, the projections they produce are mesmerising and make the even the mundane beautiful. They are so versatile too, at once becoming a studio, a subject to photograph or film, a source of inspiration or simply a place to relax and enjoy the simple act of seeing - not just looking.

Why Bicycles?

It's not just because it's cheap, fun and self sufficient. Travelling by bike lets you keep a great level of connection with your environment and the slower pace means that you never miss a thing. It allows us to reach these places without degrading the very thing we are there to see and celebrate. Not even the notorious hills of Devon and Cornwall will stop us rolling on!

Please, take a look at our rewards and help get our wheels rolling, get this show on the road, let us hit the road, or whichever other cliché you prefer!

Plenty of Potential Pinhole Pedallers Partnerships!
Posted: Sunday, 17 July, 2011 - 16:07

What a difference a week makes!

Spurred on by the growing success of our wonderful Sponsume pledgers, I have been contacting different organisations and potential partners to help make the contributions go further. I'm unable to name names just yet as we are waiting for confirmation and negotiating terms, but if all goes well we should be able to provide or get substantial discounts key areas that represent a really substantial part of our budget:

Camera Equipment - (a nice fast lens'll help taking pictures inside the camera)

The bike trailers - The only way to carry as much gear as we'll be taking

Mobile communications - This will help us keep everyone updated with our progress with blog updates, photo uploads and an active twitter feed for the tour..

Art work - To avoid looking like just a strange gazebo, I'm talking with a talented artist to put her drawings an illustrations to do with the project on the sides.

Gallery space - A potential galley space in Bristol and 2 in Devon, a touring exhibition could be really great and offer more chances to show a larger range of the publics work. Fantastic!

Like I say, none of this is confirmed yet, BUT the idea is getting really great feedback from all those we approach so we are really hopeful.

In the mean time, please pledge away and help us spread the word - these partnerships will help your money go even further and without it, it simply can't happen. They really are so important, and appreciated so so much! Pledge away, and help make this happen...

A great big thank you,

Sam
