There is a thin line between madness and normality
Charlie Jr has spent some time in a mental home for adolescents due to anger management issues and various offending behaviours. After extensive treatment, everybody has agreed that he is ready to come home to his family. His home is one of peaceful repression, with a mother who prioritises her beauty over her emotions, a homosexual sister who fearfully refuses to come out of the closet and a detached father with a love of good jazz and a connection to his son that is deeper than what he allows the others to perceive. Everyone is happy to bury their issues and secrets in order to create a calm and simple environment, however, it becomes clear that Charlie Jr is a force of energy that is too difficult to control. The story explores the various levels of repression that are present in our society and how this can be related to madness. Based on the theory of nurture versus nature, the characters surround themselves with normality and act as if they belong in the hope that it will become part of their nature and that they will learn to be satisfied. However, with the return of Charlie Jr, the family will be forced to question their quiet lives of constrained mania.
