A registered charity, the London Sinfonietta is one of the world’s elite contemporary classical music ensembles with a reputation built on the virtuosity of its performances and ambitious programming. Our mission is to make an extraordinary programme of contemporary classical music each season that takes risks, develops new work and supports emerging talent, and which challenges, engages and educates a wide public in London, the UK and internationally with inspiring world-class performances, projects and resources.
The creation of new music has been at the core of the London Sinfonietta’s work since its foundation in 1968. It has commissioned or premiered over 300 works, ranging from Luciano Berio, Harrison Birtwistle and Steve Reich to the emerging composers involved in its Blue Touch Paper project - an innovative initiative which gives composers the opportunity to take risks and develop ideas without the pressure of a public performance.
The ensemble also supports the development of young musicians. The annual London Sinfonietta Academy is a week-long intensive course in which around 25 talented young musicians, selected from open auditions across the UK, have the opportunity to gain experience and receive training in core contemporary repertoire. Sinfonietta Principal Players provide the students with expert tuition and advice.
The London Sinfonietta is a Resident Orchestra of Southbank Centre in London, with its headquarters at Kings Place in north London. It continues to take the best contemporary music to venues and festivals throughout the UK and worldwide with a busy touring schedule. Ticket pricing policies are designed to be accessible to all with frequent special offers and concessions for students and young people; and for those unable to attend live performances, selected concerts are broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
