Hi! My name is First Bicycle
We are First Bicycle - an Edinburgh-based production company set up to produce Elspeth Turner's debut play - 'The Idiot at the Wall'. After an amazing 5-night run at The Pleasance Theatre here in Edinburgh, we are gearing up to bring the show to the Edinburgh International Fringe Festival. With your support, we will appear at The Bedlam Theatre for the duration of the Fringe. We encourage you to check out this page, and our blog, too, for more information about the play - and our progress. With your generosity, we will carry this play onto a world stage! Thank you so much for your faith in our project - we appreciate all support - large and small!

About the play.....
'The Idiot at the Wall'
World Premiere
Writer: Elspeth Turner – Director: Emily Reutlinger
“A confident, gripping dramatic narrative” - Joyce McMillan: The Scotsman
First Bicycle presents Elspeth Turner’s debut play The Idiot at the Wall.
"Cursing the cream is one thing. But the air in a man's lungs.....that comes and goes as it pleases."
Set on a Hebridean island in the wake of World War One, this drama sees a traditional way of life struggle against the encroachment of the modern world, and challenges us to consider the power of prophecy over reason. Gaelic songs of the period enrich a score composed and arranged by Murdo Turner and Tim du Feu.
“A lovingly told story of crofters that creates a magical island on stage” The British Theatre Guide
Celebrating her personal island heritage, and blending English with Gaelic, Turner’s play traverses myth and reality to present a haunting tale all but lost to the modern world. This production roots itself in traditional Hebridean storytelling, and offers an authentic new voice in Scottish theatre.
“an intriguing new play constructed from a love of history, of legend and Gaelic song” – The Public Reviews
The Idiot at the Wall is directed by Emily Reutlinger, with Set designed by Eve Murray and costumes by Rebecca McLeod.
About First Bicycle....
After meeting a few years ago at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, and both finding our way back home to Scotland, we decided it was time to do, make, write.....to collaborate, use our skills, our savvy, our gumtion - to make theatre in the place we call home - and we are so proud to be doing that, with this play. We are so thrilled that audiences, so far, have been leaving the theatre moved, entertained, prodded, informed - and better off for a night at the theatre, where a great story is being told. This is what it's about: we are passionate about making theatre important once more - and not just to regular theatre audiences, but to many, many more people besides.
. "Let us hope that ‘the world will come to see it’ at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe" Ronald Black, Gaelic Editor, The Scotsman
As we progress, we'll add clips to our profile, of the rehearsals in progress....a whole lot of work and a whole lot of faith has brought us this far, and with your backing, we can make it to the Fringe!!
Here's one to get us started....Angela Milton being schooled in the Gaelic, by the excellent Allan Turner!!
