The start of something huge. A jaw-dropping and hugely moving story. Amazing show ...” - Author Mark Billingham via Twitter
“It works on so many levels: storytelling, theatre, family, immigrant communities, history, the war, how life was, mental health, memory, biography, the ‘art’ of interpretation, what does one’s life add up to in the end.” - Mike Alfreds (Theatre Director)
In 1926, Shoemaker Ab Solomons drew on the wage-packet he gave to his wife Celie. Throughout their marriage, Ab drew a wage-packet cartoon for Celie every week.
Storyteller Danny Braverman’s solo show tells the story of how Danny discovered the lost art of his Great-uncle Ab.
Wot? No Fish!! is a story about love, art, history … and catering.
Danny, together with director Nick Phlippou, has been developing Wot? No Fish!! over the past year. Last January the show was previewed in London, supported by the Jewish Community Centre for London. Audience response was so overwhelmingly enthusiastic that we decided to take the show to the Edinburgh Festival.
Our preview audiences said:
“Absolutely brilliant and fascinating.”
“I cried. I feel like this afternoon has played a significant part in my life – it hit me like a train.”
"Totally overwhelming"
"Touching and beautifully directed ... it should go global."
"Nobody tells stories like Danny. Nobody."
“It could be as important as Pepys Diary one day.”
“I loved the simplicity, reality and true sense of sharing a very fascinating, touching and meaningful story that spoke on so many levels. I felt, …. well …., privileged.”
“Captivating, wonderful and beautifully presented.”
“What a beautiful story – brought a little tear to my eye – amazing art, delightfully told.”
“I loved hearing about Jewish culture in the bit of East London where I live (Clapton E5), but like all good storytelling the themes are universal through the specific.”
The Edinburgh Festival is the perfect opportunity for the show to get the attention it deserves. We have secured an excellent venue (details under wraps at the time of writing) and are confident that an Edinburgh springboard will lead to major touring nationally and internationally.
We also know that the show works powerfully with a very broad audience. A successful Edinburgh run will provide an excellent platform for future funding for a tour of schools and community venues in 2014.
Achieving our Sponsume target will mean that we can cover our accommodation and marketing costs for the Edinburgh show. Exceeding our target will enable us to develop our touring exhibition so that more audiences can see more of Ab’s extraordinary art.
So, please give what you can afford and spread the word.
We're pleased to say that the show is on the bill at a fantastic Edinburgh Venue.
