Mushin' Mon Newton Marshall's goal is to come back once again from Jamaica to Alaska to compete in the 2014 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. A tough 1,049 miles considered "the last great race on earth." He will have a team to run from fellow Iditarod veteran musher, Wade Marrs.
The next step is to submit the entry fee on June 29th. Your contributions to this fundraising campaign will help the Mushin' Mon get a head-start on the trail to Nome in 2014. One Mush, One Love and many many Thanks for your help!
Newton is a Yukon Quest (2008) and Iditarod (2010) finisher, with the support of Chukka Tours who started the Jamaica Dog Sled Team. Thinking his racing career was over, Newton came back to Alaska for what he thought would be "just vacation" in June 2012. While there he attended the annual volunteer and musher sign-up picnic at Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race Headquarters. Before the event was over, Newton had signed up for Iditarod 2013.
This move meant Newton would be completely on his own for finding a team and funding his race, without the support of his original deep-pocketed sponsors. With the help of friends, fellow mushers, and new fans and sponsors, Newton was able to pull a "puppy" team together, and borrow a few lead dogs to guide the team.
While on the trail, Newton being the ever generous and jovial Jamaican slowed his Iditarod down to help two rookie mushers on the trail. While falling back to help, his team got tangled and one of his dogs got loose, forcing him to scratch from the race. Miss May became part of the legends of Iditarod, after she took herself on a reverse race tracking nearly all the way back to her home kennel in Chugiak. A happy ending for May.
Now it's Newton's turn for a happy ending, by finishing a good race to Nome in 2014. Will you help sponsor him toward that goal? One Love, One Mush, Many Thank yous.
