Ben Jonson’s 1606 social satire sees wealthy Venetian Volpone devise a scheme to expand his wealth by playing on other’s greed. Assisted by his parasitic friend Mosca, he feigns terminal illness to persuade three fortune hunters; Corvino, Voltore and Corbaccio, to disperse gifts in the hope he will make them the sole benefactors of their will. Spurred on by 'this heat that is life', Volpone and Mosca over-reach themselves and eventually face the consequences their greed has foisted upon them.
Our production will be a deconstruction of the original text, heavily cutting it down from its original three hour running time, excising the sub-plot of Sir Politic Would Be, and exploring Jonson’s tale of the corrupting influence avarice has on the human condition and how this relates to audiences in the 21st century. Updating Jonson’s work to a contemporary setting we aim to show just how intoxicating materialism can be and the carnage it can cause. Using the Commedia Dell’Arte influence that Jonson displays, we will find contemporary resonances for these types.
The work Fire Under The Horizon aim to make is inherently theatrical and live, building work in a collaborative nature with designer, actors and composers, to produce work that is both original and aims to find theatrical truth in the work we create. Adapted and directed by Fire Under The Horizons AD Kris Hallett, with movement direction by Jemma Bicknell and an original score composed by Adam Linson our staging will be irreverent, fresh, sexy and funny and dust off the cobwebs of this classic and make it live for today. Please follow our progress on our We Fund blog and our website, soon to be updated with video blogs and interviews with actors and creative’s.
