LegalAliens is raising funds for a full three week London run of THE RETURN, the first English translation of Il Ritorno, by award winner Italian playwright Sergio Pierattini.
A family in industrial northern Italy. A daughter returning after a long absence. A dark secret... Humour, drama and social commentary mix in this tragi-comic portrait of contemporary Italy, where traditional values are threatened and old ideals have collapsed.
The company worked for a year at the translation, using an original approach that sees translators collaborating with a cast of bilingual actors to achieve an English version that doesn't simply "transfer" the story into a different linguistic landscape but really re-creates the flavour and rythm of the Italian language in English.
The Return was presented in August 2012 at the Camden fringe festival, where it sold out and received great reviews.Directed by Becka McFadden, the show is engaging, moving and offers a portrait of contemporary Italy very different from holiday brochures and usual stereotypes.
We have a cast of four and a very simple set. The money will be used to partly off set costs of theatre hiring, set building, light design and actors's wages. We are also actively seeking co-producers and bigger sponsors to achieve our final goal.
