Pot of Thieves Theatre Company, comprised of Students from Aberystwyth, Mid-Wales, has been selected from over two hundred entries to perform at this years International Student Drama Festival alongside companies from all over the world. Pot of Thieves entered their world premiere production of Howard Barker’s Five Names into the festival and have been chosen as one of ten UK shows as an exemplary example of young British theatre that reaches a global standard.
We need to raise some money to help fund our travel, accomodation and production costs for the 9 day festival! Any amount will be more then gratefully received.
The 14 Aberystwyth students will perform Five Names in a programme that also includes ten International shows including productions from Harvard University in the USA, the New National Theatre of Japan, the ASHTAR theatre of Palestine, an all female group from Zimbabwe as well as shows from Israel, Germany, Iran, Australia and Georgia. Although the competition had been very fierce, the selectors felt that Pot of Thieves showed an exceptional boldness of theatrical vision and a maturity that is rarely seen in student led theatre. The festival is held in Sheffield 22nd 30th June, as part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad; ISDF is for anyone who wants to get involved with drama and the creative industries. It is a festival where the most inspirational work from diverse, young and emerging artists is celebrated and presented alongside workshops from leading professionals from around the world.
The company’s Artistic Director Phoebe Patey-Ferguson released a statement saying “We are thrilled to have been selected to represent the town and university on a global scale such as this. It is a production we are exceedingly proud of and we are especially excited since it is a Barker play and he is an honorary professor of the university. The opportunity to show Aberystwyth on this international scale is a great honour and opens many doors for all members of our company”.
Dr Jamie Medhurst, Head of the Theatre, Film and Television department at Aberystwyth University gave his congratulations to the company saying “I am delighted to hear the news and wish the company all the very best at the ISDF. They should be very proud of this achievement, as is the department”.
