Ponyboy Curtis is a brand new permanent ensemble focused on formally experimental performance. The project will draw together a group of young / emergent actors and makers, shaped by the artistic vision of acclaimed director Chris Goode, described by The Guardian as “one of the geniuses of British theatre”. Ponyboy’s work will be bold and challenging but also accessible and appealing, rigorous yet romantic.
The artistic benefits of maintaining a permanent ensemble, especially when working with exploratory formats, are obvious: the building and exploring of sustained relationships between collaborators allows for richer, more layered, and ultimately more sophisticated work – and this is particularly true in respect of a company like Ponyboy Curtis with an interest in highly intimate and risk-taking performance, where the relationships between performers are really critical.
But longterm ensemble activity is hard to support and resource, especially in its early days, when the company is developing its shared language and before audiences and critics have been exposed to the work. That’s why we’re crowdfunding this launch project through Sponsume.
This first project will provide for a week’s workshop in London in December 2014, allowing the initial company members to start working together behind closed doors to explore their first impulses and start to create a shared aesthetic. There will be no sharing of work yet, but it’ll all feed into an ongoing process that will eventually inform our first audience-facing performances next spring.
This is a crucial stage for Ponyboy Curtis. We hope you'll accept our invitation to become part of our journey from the very start.
