Who are you?
My name is Nick Tomalin and I'm a professional jazz musician and composer living and working in London. I graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1993 and since then I've been teaching and gigging in and around London. I've played in most of the prestigious jazz venues in London including Ronnie Scott's, The Vortex and the Jazz Cafe, and I've been very fortunate to work with some of the best jazz musicians in the country including Stan Sulzmann, Jim Mullen, Don Weller and Alan Barnes.
What is this project?
A couple of years ago I put together a quartet to perform my own original tunes. The quartet features Gareth Lockrane on flutes and also occasionally includes Nia Lynn on vocals. Gareth is a rising star on the UK jazz scene and leads his own septet and big band. He performed regularly with the late great South African pianist Bheki Mseleku and more recently with Phil Robson's Immeasurable Code featuring Mark Turner. The other band members are Dominic Howles on bass and Matt Fishwick drums. The music has the drive and swing of the classic Blue Note Recordings from the 50's and 60's, but fuses it with a more contemporary approach to harmony and melody. Although we've performed together regularly we haven't had the chance to record yet, so this project would enable us to record our debut CD consisting mainly of original tunes I've written for the band. I'm applying for a grant from Jazz Services to cover the cost of the recording (approx £1500) however I still need around £1500 to pay for the mixing, the physical manufacture of the CD and the artwork for the album.
How can I support the project?
Sponsume is a crowd-funding web-site which enables artists to raise money for projects that without financial support may not be viable. Producing an album is an extremely expensive business and involves recording costs, musicians fees, the physical manufacture of the album, artwork, promotion etc. Crowd-funding enables sponsers to pledge a stake in the project by offering donors special rewards linked with the project itself.
