We are the graduating students of the Documentary Photography BA at The University of Wales, Newport and we would like to tell you about our project.
As a group of 29 photographers, we are making a new publication that will bring together our work as we graduate with the centennial celebrations of photography at Newport. A book can travel and we hope that ours will travel internationally and end up on the desks and bookshelves of arts organisations, photographers, newspaper and magazine organisations, enthusiasts and supporters of what we are creating. As a book it will function beyond an exhibition space, for it will archive the work that we have made as the hundredth year to graduate from a photography course at Newport.
We are documentary photography students; however the work that we are creating as a group reaches beyond the traditional notion of the genre and reconsiders what documentary photography is in 2012. We work with film and digital, black and white and colour, studio and location, current affairs and conceptual ideas.
We want people to see our work and this is why we want you to know about our project. We need your help. Making a book is a costly venture and we need to fund raise £6,000 to get 750 copies printed and bound. If we can raise £2,500 here on Sponsume we will be part of the way there!
There will also be other fund raising events around the Newport/Cardiff area in the near future so keep an eye out!
Take a look at the work that we are making...
Hello everyone,
Just a quick update to show pictures of the book currently being produced at Taylor Brothers Bristol.
Exciting times ahead..
Hello,
We thought we'd update you all on the project. We're happy to say that the publication is coming along nicely, and the book is being sent to the printers this week!
We'll be launching it as planned on June 1st, and after this date we'll be sending out the books and all other rewards.
We now have our website up at www.newportdocphot.co.uk so please feel free to take a look!
So today we reached the target!
We'd all like to extend our biggest thanks to everyone that's supported us.
All the gifts will be sent out in June of this year, after the launch of the book!
Thank you to all who donated!
Hello from BA Doc Phot!
Thank you for the unbelievable response we're received so far! We’ve reached half-way but there’s still a long way to go so please continue to sponsor our project.
The following update explains a little more about the specifications, design and production of the book that we are producing and can be purchased through sponsoring out project
The book itself is being published by Taylor Brothers of Bristol, who have been in the printing trade since c. 1870 and have a wealth of experience in producing photographic books.
The book is also being designed by Maria Juelisch, an exceptionally talented third year student studying for a BA Graphic Design at Newport, who has recently received a place to study for an MA in Graphic Design at the London College of Communication. We have included below some of her design sketches but you can also view more of her work here.
The following outlines the specifications for the softback book:
Dimensions: 240mm x 170mm
Pages: 200
Cover: Challenger Offset Un-Coated Matt 300gsm with foil embossing
Inner: Challenger Offset Un-Coated Matt 120gsm
Finish: Thread sewn binding
This is the working dummy that we have of the book from Taylors which gives you an idea of the size of the book
We're using an un-coated matt paper, which gives the book a really nice quality and touch.

The cover of the book is being based around this design, which uses the contor terrain lines of Newport and Caerleon, which will wrap around both the front and back of the book.
