Hello Everyone!
In 2011 I went out, orginally, as a volunteer to Kenya in Africa. Unaware of what was to lie around the corner, art began to infiltrate into every moment of my Kenyan existence whether it was through my own notes and sketchbooks, the two groups who I taught how to draw or the artist who I met out in the Internally Displaced Person camp. Those people from Kenya did amazing things with me and they inspired me in more ways than words will ever be able to express.
This crowd-funding project is one of many fundraising methods I am exploring to reach me to my target of £3000. I am seeking a little help to allow me to go back to Kenya, in October 2012, and hopefully develop what was started last year within my art practice. Upon returning home at the end of June 2011 I began the creation of a new body of work, 'I was here, I lived, I loved', which went on display at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast in March 2012. This was drawn out of my time in Kenya in May and June of 2011. Something happened with my painting and my thought process, as an artist, within that body of work. Now, in 2012, I would very much like to explore it further and try to understand and solidify my life as this artist as, this time, I wish to work alongside Kenyans, collaborate on art projects and teach to others as I explore my own body of work.
I am aiming to push my painting career, like never before, now that I am a full time artist. Any support and help that I may gain from anyone will be invaluable and I would be forever indebted as you would be helping me strive towards my ambitions and help me become this artist who I know lives inside me. Unfortunately I am not in a position to be able to entirely fund this project myself. This initiative is to hopefully enable you to come with me on this residency so that you can also experience all the emotion and colour.
About me:
I, Clinton Kirkpatrick, am a young emerging artist specialising in painting. I knew I was a painter from an early age and so was confident enough to place all my energy into pushing it forward. I am now a full time self-employed artist. My latest exhibition was in the Waterfront Hall in Belfast where I filled over 150 feet of space with new large-scale paintings relating to my time in Kenya in May and June of 2011.
I graduated from the University of Huddersfield in England with my BA Hons: Painting and Drawing degree. There I was awarded two scholarships to travel to Singapore and South Korea to invest in different art practices. Since returing back to Northern Ireland in 2008 I have been awarded the Tyrone Guthrie Centre bursary three consecutive years by the Lisburn Arts Advisory Committee.
Future:
I will be keeping on top of sending out relevant rewards to people as my time in Kenya takes place. When I return from Kenya I will be straight into creating a new body of work which will go on display in 2013 in Northern Ireland. There will be no hanging about with my painting meaning that any rewards, that need to be created, will be completed within the couple of months after returning home.
