I am going to present my performance 'I guess if the stage exploded...' at the Edinburgh Fringe festival in August this year.
It is very exciting times, as I have been invited to perform as part of the prestigious British Council Edinburgh Showcase, which takes place only every two years and there's a fierce selection process to get into it. Promoters and programmers from all over the world will be invited to attend the shows that are part of the British Council Showcase. Therefore it is a really big springboard for international touring. I would love to tour 'I guess if the stage exploded...' nationally and internationally in 2014 and 2015 and am very excited about what is going to open up for me.
The Edinburgh Fringe festival is very exciting and full of potential, but unfortunately it is also extremely expensive. To perform for a week only, will cost me around £7,500, including expenses for a stage manager, a second technician, space hire, travel expenses and accommodation, technical equipment, marketing, fees for the external performers via live skype connection and for a living Eagle Owl... Yes you heard right, a living Eagle Owl will be part of each performance and live on stage. The owl is called Fraggle and will come with a Scottish owl handler. However, hiring Fraggle is not cheap, to say the least.
How YOU can come in
I have been able to secure funding support from several organisations such as the brilliant In Between Time, ICIA Bath and Theatre Bristol. Some income will also be accumulated through ticket sales. However, I have estimated that I will need another £2000 to break even, and that is without paying myself a fee. So that's where I thought I ask YOU for help. If I could generate £1000 trough crowd funding, that would be a really big support.
It would be amazing if you could step in and help. Whatever you can donate will make a huge difference and I can not express my gratitude enough for every pound you pledge in support of my project.
About my show
I guess if the stage exploded...
Performance maker Sylvia Rimat follows the aspirational and possibly impossible goal to present a show never to be forgotten by its audience members - not a single one. By introducing memory tasks and techniques and applying them to the stage situation, the audience is systematically trained to remember - hopefully forever.
I guess if the stage exploded... draws on presence and sight, on what happens in our brain when we create memories, and our urge to be special and commemorated.
Rimat will be joined by several performers from around the world who support her mission live via Skype, and a living Eagle Owl.
Rimat is disarmingly clever, delightfully polite and also modest enough to allow us to like her first and then be impressed by her techniques, some of which she explains and examines, others of which she hints at, and one or two which she wealds most carefully like a magician. Gscene Magazine
