The Hybrid Project - Air - The Film

South Kensington, GB

Love film? Love science fiction? Love amazing collaborative art projects? YIKES! There sure is a LOT going on here! You’re going to love The Hybrid Project!

The Hybrid Project is an innovative, voluntary collaboration between designers, artists and film-makers, working together to explore 'Hybrid Design' (the fusion of two or more contrasting design aesthetics); it culminates in the production of an exciting science fiction film 'AIR', to be directed by Emma Maclennan.

Production is based at the V&A Museum in London, where project originator Hayley Nebauer is Artist in Residence until March 2013 in connection with their major exhibition 'Hollywood Costume'. As a key focus of her residency, Hayley initiated 'The Hybrid Project' to produce a polished example of how hybrid design can be used to create in collaboration with others.

Throughout the entire filmmaking process we will be working with incredibly talented and highly experienced industry professionals, including Production Designer Tony Noble (Moon) and Editor John Richards (The Prisoner, Doctor Who, Band of Brothers) along with burgeoning new talent to create an exciting and unique film – extending the ‘hybrid’ idea to our filmmaking ethos as well as the design process. There’s so many people involved! To read about some of our gems of design and film experimentation, please see our website for more information at www.thehybridproject.com

The wonderful, innovative film sets will be built entirely within galleries at the V&A Museum, beginning from January, involving many wonderful professional creatives and members of the public. An additional part of the film will be shot on a beautifully remote wind farm, far from London. Once the shoot is complete, the post-Production of the film will be done at Molinare, in their Theatre One - the most technically advance post-production suite in Europe.

We hope you love the sound of the project and the film and that you might help us make it happen!

SECUROS© - Welcome to SECUROS© – Humanity Will Survive.

Securos is the fictional underground living facility where the story of ‘AIR’ the film takes place. We will be building the real Securos (the film sets) within the V&A Museum.

Check out our fictional corporate promo video for booking your living space in Securos: https://vimeo.com/51436962

Here on Sponsume, you can book your own purpose-built, virtual living space within SECUROS© to survive the disasters befalling humanity on the surface of the Earth! By pre-booking your virtual place in SECUROS© through Sponsume, you will be supporting the creation ‘AIR’.

SYNOPSIS - AIR

Life in the subterranean living facility SECUROS© is regimented. The facility has been inhabited for a long, unknown period of time, the people within believing that Earth was destroyed by apocalyptic windstorms. Their history tells them that life in SECUROS© is a test by a higher power: if they demonstrate their faith in this idea then they will ultimately be rewarded with a second life on Earth.

Alex is an engineer who works alongside her best friend Nick to maintain the air supply in SECUROS©. She dreams that there must be more to existence than her daily routine and the controlled life they all live, however the problems with their air supply is the main focus of her concern.

Due to consistent mechanical failures, the air supply in SECUROS© is diminishing at such a rate that it can no longer sustain the life of everyone living in the facility. The Minister, the spiritual and political leader who governs SECUROS©, believes that dramatic sacrificial measures are required in order to ensure the survival of the race.

One day, whilst working to unblock an air vent, Alex stumbles across an ancient manual that reveals an alternative history to SECUROS© and the meaning of their lives in the facility. Knowing that the manual would be seen as heresy and that revealing its truth could get her killed, Alex hides it - even from Nick with whom she is in love. However, realising that the only way to prevent the sacrifices and save Nick’s life is to use the knowledge found in the manual to try to fix the power outages, Alex must escape SECUROS© and brave the catastrophic winds of the world above...where she discovers the poignant truth.

Funding target

By donating to the project, you will essentially help us create something that you can enjoy. And we’ll be VERY grateful for your contribution!

Filmmaking can require a lot of money; whilst being visually ambitious and planning wonderful sets, props and costumes - all custom designed and built for purpose, our film is being made conscientiously on a well managed budget. All filmmakers on the project are collaborating for the merits of the project and all money raised will go to creating what is shown on screen.

We are hoping to raise £11,000 through Sponsume, which is under a quarter of our overall target for the film. The rest of the film budget will been raised through other sources including our wonderful corporate sponsors! We will continue to do everything we can to raise the remaining funds we need - we really need this £11K to make the film happen and are SO grateful for any support you can give - every pound closer we get helps us build film sets that are so much more spectacular!

There's a huge range of perks available in return for your sponsorship. Though of something that you'd like and can't see it on the list? Email us! We can tailor a sponsorship package just for you!

CORPORATE SPONSORSHIP

We have a great corporate sponsorship scheme that is TAX DEDUCTIBLE! If you'd like to know more about our client/ corporate entertaining perks and how AIR could become part of your CSR program of events (Corporate Social Responsibility), please email us for more information -

Our Major Sponsor!

We are pleased to announce ScottishPower Renewables asa major corporate sponsor of our film 'AIR' being made at the V&A Museum.

There are many wonderful reasons why we are so excited to have ScottishPower Renewables as Renewable Energy Partner of Air , just one of those being the beautiful Scottish scenery that we will be filming at one of their wind farm locations.

From everyone at The Hybrid Project - a very warm welcome on board!

A star from the BBC, John started his career in editing whilst working for BBC Wales in 1982. He has dabbled in practically every genre you could imagine, from documentary, to sci-fi, to romantic comedies, including titles such as Tibet, The Lost Nation, Undertaking Betty, and It’s A Boy Girl Thing, and worked all over the UK as well as having a footing in Hollywood.

Whilst in Hollywood, John worked on HBO’s international award winning mini-series Band of Brothers alongside talents such as Tom Hanks and David Leland. On return to the UK, John returned to his roots, becoming part of the cult phenomenon that is Doctor Who, working with both Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat to bring the Doctor back into the homes of the British public (re-generation after re-generation after re-generation…).

It’s no real wonder then how John ended up as part of AIR’s core crew. After working with Daleks and insane Timelords, AIR should be a breeze (no pun intended). If Doctor Who is anything to go by, Britain’s idea of science fiction is constantly moving and shaping into something new, with Brits unafraid to step up and take part, John is amongst the forefront of its development – a talented strength in visual effects and CGI within to his cutting arsenal.

Collaborating on the Hybrid Project
I was interested in collaborating on the Hybrid Project because it's a very experimental project, the opportunity to explore a different process of designing, researching, making, using and combining different materials and design elements, collaborating with individuals from different creative backgrounds.

I really wanted to explore working not only in costume design but also with props, architecture, and science. I have had three sessions into the Hybrid Project and each session has definitely lived up to what the Hybrid Project offers. We have had group discussions exploring hybrid design further; it’s been interesting discussing how the hybrid design works, how it can be applied. I like that theories are always welcomed and there’s no right or wrong theories.

I’m looking forward to applying the Hybrid Design to my own project and explore how it works with my own design process and the text I will be working from, if there’s a significant or subtle difference in research, design development, ideas, styles, the visuals. The practical, making sessions has allowed me to apply the Hybrid Design on mini tasks. So far through the practical sessions I have learnt that the two aesthetics you are trying to fuse together is like forcing two same sided magnets together in that they’ll repel each other therefore it’s to find the balance in using the two aesthetics within the work and script. During our experiments we have been exploring and experimenting fusing streamline and rococo together. It’s also interesting working the fusions of streamline and rococo into creating fan designs for the science fiction film ‘AIR’. I look forward to exploring how each creative individual responds to the Hybrid project in their own work and how the Hybrid Design evolves and the outcome of the project in ‘AIR’.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Hybrid Project workshops are being run every Thursday at the V&A Museum and alternate between theory and 'make' (practical) workshops which enable collaborators to research and learn how Hybrid design processes can feed into their own work while being exposed to new ideas, working with collaborators from creative mediums and jobs quite different to their own. Work being done and Hybrid design research undertaken will feed directly into the major project, science fiction film 'AIR', while collaborators also work on their own independent creative projects, applying hybrid design process to their practice. These sessions are funded independently and all funds raised via Sposume are used specifically for the film 'AIR'.

The Hybrid Project in full swing!
Posted: Thursday, 15 November, 2012 - 09:11

Thanks so much for visiting this page and taking an interest in The Hybrid Project and our brilliant film-to-be 'Air'.

We've been working hard behind the scenes to get all those many things moving that a production needs in place for a good idea to become a great film - phew! While it's all hard work, we're having a really great time doing it, which we think feeds back into making the project more enjoyable for everyone involved.

Things are progressing on several fronts. The main creatives on the film are brainstorming away, coming up with ideas and putting pencil to paper to churn out possibilities. The production side of things to going well too - the renewable energy community has been very supportive of what we are doing and it's great to have their enthusiasm for the wonderful ways we're using onshore wind and turbine design within the film. Our combination of working from the realistic practicalities of wind turbine design and aesthetics of the aerodynamics involved really injects some exciting ideas into both the practical and artistic aspects of the film. We think you'll be quite excited to see what we can do with wind turbines and the ideas contained within them!

The Hybrid Project collaborators have had some great sessions lately. Workshops alternate between being theory/ research (of past hybrid design work and current work by collaborators) and practice/ make sessions where we have a great time experimenting and making things to test out our ideas. Our workshop experimenting with fan blade design, aerodynamics and biomimicry was especially fun - the climax of the day when we put it all together in our team-built little 'wind-tunnel' (ok, so we hijacked some fans from around the V&A) and watched our models and fans all come to life.... ok, so maybe some didn't work, but we learnt a lot from those too.

We'll be telling you week by week about some of the collaborators on the project, what their involvement is and why they're excited to be on board. We're working on ideas to bring you the most innovative, visual and enjoyable film we can in AIR. Hybrid Project workshops & activities are being funded through other sources; every penny we receive from your Sponsume donation will be spent on the film itself  - building the sets, props, costumes, lighting the world of Securos and shooting it with beautiful photography.

Thanks so much for your interest and support - please share our Sponsume page with your friends, family and colleagues and encourage them to give anything they can - even a pound, euro, dollar or any other major currency. We're so grateful for your support - thanks!
