Who We Are
Just Some Theatre Company are a non-profit arts organisation based in the North West. We recently put on three plays: Coward by James Martin Charlton, Dead Hands by Howard Barker and Track & Field by Kevin Barry. This whirlwind tour was an action packed and relentless three month long christening for the company, where we made some invaluable contacts, put on three memorable and distinct plays, and learned a heap of do's and dont's along the way.
Following this tour we decided to branch out into new areas, and thest include:
- Producing an audio play of Coward, which will be released for sale shortly.
- Running workshops in acting techniques and public speaking and presentation skills.
- Providing supportive material in the form of 6 eBooks for training and professional actors and public speakers to develop their skills.
- Providing help and advice to other young theatre companies in these hard times of funding cuts and scarce work in the arts.
Theatre is still our main focus though, and we have been working feverishly on planning this - our first large tour!
Coward - by James Martin Charlton
About Coward, playwright David Eldridge remarked on his blog - "(t)he play's quite an achievement in it's own way as Charlton sets the bar high for himself in creating a fictional Noel Coward - but he pulls it off. I came away thinking his fictional Coward is every bit as successful as Peter Morgan's versions of Frost, Nixon, Longford, Blair and HM the Queen. A fiction yes - but capturing something of the truth of the man I felt. ... an intelligent, accessible play written with dash, wit and real comic brio."
Coward is a fictional play featuring the playwright and performer Noël Coward as a lead character. Set in London in the early 1930s, Coward concerns the star's relationship with a young struggling actor, Leonard Marlowe (a fictional figure) who arrives at Coward's swank London apartment for an audition, only to find that the part Noël has in mind for him is as amorous as it is theatrical. Leonard is star struck and taken in by Coward’s charm, and he is tempted away from his girlfriend and his faith by the fame and fortune Noël is promising him. All the while, events are observed and stage-managed by Noël's personal assistant, Cole Lesley, the epitome of the good and faithful servant.
We have been working closely with James Martin Charlton on this project, and will be working alongside director and biomechanics practitioner Terence Mann in rehearsals, with further assistance from dramaturg Mark Whitelaw to really do the script justice.
Just Some will be taking the play to the following venues:
- 6th September - Victoria Hall in Settle, A uniquely charming old music hall veue with cabaret style seating.
- 12th, 13th, 14th September - Marlborough Theatre in Brighton.
- 20th September - Create in Mansfield, A new and very modern space with a growing reputation.
- 27th September - Pavillion Arts Centre in Buxton.
- 22nd October - 10th November - The White Bear in London, an intimate space ideal for our production.
Why We Need Your Help
Putting on a play isn't quite as easy as learning a script and performing it in a theatre. There are many costs and obstacles to consider, and with a play that is reliant on accurate costume, props and set, these costs are quite substantial.
We are determined to put on this play, and will be producing it no matter what, but the quality of the production values and the audience experience will depend greatly on the amount of support we get. Any money you give will go straight into this show, and in making it a high quality experience for all who see it.
The success of this show will also act as a 'calling card' for our company, and an example of what we are capable of producing, so an investment in this project will be just as big an investment in the company as a whole!
