We plan a Bird Henge near Stonehenge in Wiltshire with Giant Birds.
It will be a permanent sculpture feature, visible free to all 24/7 beside a public path in the 2 acre Scraptors sculpture mad garden in the Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs Area of Outstanding Beauty. It will be 20 minutes drive from Stonehenge and accessible by public tranport. We will publish with their agreement on the website of the Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs Area of Outstanding Beauty a detailed Birdhenge Walk starting at nearby villages and including details of the history, willdife and landscape. All our backers from £1 upwards will get a reward and be entitled to a visit, by prior appointment, to explore the private sculpture mad garden with over 100 sculptures made from recycled materials. Also some giant murals. The last three rows of the Gallery show some of the pieces in the garden.
We will represent Wiltshire birds:
- the Great Bustard, the world's heaviest flying bird, which is being re-introduced into Salisbury Plain by the Great Bustard Project. We are donating 5% of our Sponsume funds raised to that venture. We will show a male Great Bustard with thewhiskers it grows in the mating season. to attracted Bustardesses.
- Also: the Buzzard, a large raptor, once rare now common. They sometimes nest nearby and have been seen training their young to hunt in this very field.
- The Lapwing also named the Peewit after its cry, once common but now rare because of changed farming methods
- The Kestrel, once also called the Windhover after its characterisitic habit.
- The Red Kite now common a little further north and oocasionally seen locally - recently reintroduced to the UK. The Raven, once driven out of Lowland Britain, but now back in Wiltshire.
- The Barn Owl, whiose numbers were depleted by destruction of nesting sites but which have been revived by a local campaign to provide artificial nesting boxes.
The henges were clearly built for ceremonial purposes so we are creating some giant High Priests who wll be in the centre of the cricle.
Behind the Bird Henge wallkers will be able to see from the path a Frieze of Egyptian gods walking in procession amongst blue, green and multicooured pyramids and behind that another frieze of some 20 silver and grey creatures
Over the summer we are exhbiting at various fetes and other lcoal events and we wil invite ideas for sculptures of the High Priests and we wil incorporate the best ideas.
If this goes well and we reach our target our next Sponsume prioject will be to convert a redundant telegraph pole, visible from the path, into a totem pole again with birds as a theme. If we exeed our current target the £ will go towards that. And in the glade under the beech trees by the path we plan some ten feet high monsters using the car bonnet of three iconic cars of the 20th century the Austin Mini, the Volkswagen and the Citroen Deux Chevaux. See Scraptors Pinterest about our future plans.
