Present Pasts by Alice Burns
12 October to 9 November 2012
at the ADF Gallery, Royal Avenue, Belfast.
Using Braille as a starting point, disabled artist Alice Burns creates objects and works on paper that offer connections to and representations of unspoken or traumatic memory. Sculptural objects offer connections to narratives through aural, visual and tactile associations. The artist chooses materials for their real or imagined ‘authenticity’ and encoded meaning. The aim is for memory to become a physical presence in the space.
"Traumatic memory can be difficult to articulate and in my work I try to represent this in a sculptural form by using existing or constructing unique sculptural languages. I like people to interact with my work and the tactile nature of Braille is the ideal medium for this. I have also used Braille to facilitate a musical composition. For other works I have constructed a unique language from knots; each rope can only be read if the reader is in possession of the key to unlock the code."
Present Pasts has been funded through the Arts & Disability Awards Ireland scheme, managed by the Arts & Disability Forum on behalf of the two Arts Councils of this island. This dedicated cross-border grant scheme for artists with disabilities will open again next year.
