Help Jamaican Dog Sled Musher Newton Marshall Race to Nome in Iditarod 2014!
Newton Marshal, 30, was born and raised in Jamaica. He was a tour guide for 10 years with Chukka in Jamaica. The company started the Jamaica Dog Sled Team to run dry land dog cart tours for tourists. This led Newton to the US and Canada to compete in the original mushing tradition of racing dogs on snow.
"Newton says, I like the warm sun but the cold teaches you how to get tough. Mother Nature teaches you how to take care of yourself and take care of the dogs to survive in the wilderness. I love running dogs because it’s the first sport I fell in love with. I like the feeling because it’s just me and the dog team.
I never got the opportunity to go to school much. I want to show kids from Jamaica or anywhere in the world that if you want something, you have to go get it yourself. The results can be endless."
Newton began mushing in 2005 and ran the Yukon Quest in 2009, thus began the dream of running the Iditarod. He finished the Iditarod in 2010. He scratched in 2011 when his dog team fell ill to a virus that spread through many teams that year. He then was forced to scratch in 2013 when one of his dogs got loose from the team, after a tangle on the trail. The story of the dog May running the reverse Iditarod is now a legendary moment in 2013 Iditarod's history.
