In a quiet moment, a gaze at your navel, an involving task or story told, you notice something as if it’s a first encounter. Something has changed, memories are archived, your body has not forgotten. Sometimes you just need to be shown. stagejuice presents Folding, an intimate participatory installation with origami.
stagejuice has been invited to premiere Folding at the Crack Theatre Festival in Newcastle, NSW. The work invites audiences to participate in a one-on-one lesson in making a traditional origami model while also engaging in meditation, reflection and discussion.
Imagine stepping into a hidden, mysterious space to see an elaborate clutter of origami hanging, illuminated by soft, old-world lighting. You sit with me at a small table, surrounded by the hanging models, to fold our own. We exchange sentiments, stories and secrets, and at the end, we exchange origami – yours is to add to the quirky sculpture and mine is a keepsake for you.
Each origami lesson will be incredibly unique for each audience member.

WHY WE ARE MAKING THIS WORK
At the core of the work are questions around neglect. While a space is created for meditative and calming action, the participant and performer will begin to consider the things about themselves that they put to the side, overlook or don’t even notice. As they fold, they realise their hands are symbolic of this neglect and surprisingly; there is so much more to discover about them.
stagejuice are interested in flexing and blurring the boundaries between performer and audience. We will create a space for conversation, revelation and reflection. We are interested in the intimate connection strangers can have and how personal the conversation can be while sharing a mutual experience. For the last few years, questions around intimacy, perception, vulnerability and humanity have been central to stagejuice's practice.
WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP
To present this installation as beautifully and delicately as we can and to show it to audiences for the first time, we need to raise funds to cover the costs of materials (paper, printing, fabrics...), lighting and prop hire, and travel allowance. We plan to be as resourceful as we can, however a small budget of $850 would really go a long way.
By reaching Crack Theatre Festival, you will not just be helping us present our work to new audiences, you will be assisting the evolution of a larger stagejuice work Smoke + Mirrors (currently in development) in which Folding, in some shape, will be part of. Crack will provide a forum for us to experiment with and consolidate the ideas in Folding and its place in a larger context.
Please join our team by donating to the project and help us get to Crack Theatre Festival!
