'Songs for the Voiceless' is an album project aiming to bring some of the unknown stories of World War I to light. This album will be about the people the War impacted, men, women and children, soldiers and civilians.
Michael J Tinker had the idea in 2012 of gathering a number of folk musicians from around the country to write and record an album to tell some of these stories for the centenary commemorations in 2014. Jon Boden of Bellowhead has already contributed a track and he was followed by Gilmore & Roberts, The Young'uns, Tom Oakes and Ian Stephenson of KAN who all agreed to get into the studio with Michael in early 2014 to put this album together. Producer Andy Bell then came on board to produce and Haystack Records have agreed to put the album out. Our aim is to have an album of 10 to 12 songs with different vocalists and musicians from the 'house band' taking the lead on each track. We will be sourcing material from the vast wealth of poetry and songs already written as well as writing our own work inspired by the stories of real people.
This album will not be about taking 'sides' in the debate about the validity of WWI, but rather will focus on the people impacted, throughout the world and through different walks of life. We want to sing the songs of the voiceless.
We have already raised enough money through Kickstarter to mean the album will definitely happen, but the more we can raise, the better the album will be. This particular campaign will enable us to gather the musicians together (there are a lot of us!) to work on material in one place to create a better collaboration. Plus we had some rewards left over that we want you to have!
