The Moving Mountain (working title)

The Moving Mountain is a trilogy of plays by award winning writer/actress Jackie Skarvellis. Set in the 50's, 60's and 70's in Wales they treat different contemporary social developments, aligning to a structure of the greek mythology plays. With Director/Dramaturg Katharina Reinthaller, the first part of the three plays has been developed further since March 2014 and will be presented in a reading in December.

The Play

Vergie, a dancer/actress struggles to make a living to support and look after her mother and daughter, endless fights about her career choice and bringing a 'bastard' (the result of an affair with a sailor) into the house have been part of their everyday lives for years. The dream of taking her daughter to London, finding a husband and making a career in the performance world takes shape after one of Vergie's many visits to the pub. The situation escalates and Ginny, the little girl, having been torn between grandmother and mother for too long and feeling pressure and guilt about her unwanted existence, runs away and drowns accidentally (?) in the nearby river.

Through the lens of the 50's, the play tackles many topics that are still highly relevant nowadays: being a female performer, a single mother and trying to find the balance between responsibility and career; the magic that is immanent to the theatre world and the sometimes romantic visions and naïve expectations of this career (Ginny wants to become an actress like her mother and is fascinated by the performance environment) and over all the opposing perceptions of lifegoals between the different generations.

This projec

In a week-long Research&Development session we want to explore the topics, aims and possibilites of an existing draft further and present our progress to an audience. We are looking to create a space where ideas can evolve and crash, where we are able to develop the characters together with actresses and establish an environment for creative collaboration across the generations.

The Money

As one of the initial topics the play deals with is the struggle of a performer to support her family, we want to pay our actresses. The majority of the £1200 will go towards the salary of our three actresses, the rest, around £300 will be used to rent a rehearsal space and to purchase costume and prop pieces.

Your support is crucial to make this project happen - we have created an array of awards, from an invitation to the reading to an exclusive insight into the rehearsal process!
