Fragments of Ash is an electrifying new play, intelligent, physical theatre that addresses the news agenda and explores the domestic impact of war after war after war. A love story measured in tragedies that asks a shocking question: what would it take to make an ordinary British mother want to become a suicide bomber?
We need some help to get it to the Edinburgh Festival. Venue 13 for 3 weeks. That's the plan.
Terry Victor, the writer and director behind this innovative production, has brought together a team that represents the very best of creative Wales. Gareth Wyn Griffiths is an inspired and respected musician and composer: he provides a score that is by turns minimal and cinematic, painting sound pictures of an imagined Afghanistan. Kylie Ann Smith is an emerging talent: her breathtaking choreography focuses on the emotional heart of a narrative that has been described as a ‘domestic Black Watch’.
The play was presented as a work-in-progress at the Savoy Theatre in March 2011. The response was fantastic: "...the excellence and the beauty of the piece is very strong ... These performers would bring exciting theatre art to any stage." [Theatre Wales] and "... an absolutely brilliant new play ... Fragments of Ash was electrifying. There is no other word for it." [Chris Ryde, Vice Chair, National Theatre of Wales].
With those words (and a lot more encouragement) ringing in our ears Edinburgh 2011 became the logical next stage for this emerging piece. But we really can't do it without help.
Blending a compelling political narrative with an original music score (played live by the composer) Fragments of Ash will offer a rare opportunity to see home-grown English language Welsh theatre tackling serious contemporary themes head on.
The most succinct review came from an anonymous texter: "Wicked. Heavy but wicked."
It's going to cost about £12,000 for the 3 weeks in Edinburgh. We need some serious help so we are banging on all the doors we can think of. If we can raise £2,750.00 here then the production values are safeguarded.
This is a show we are really passionate about. Join us on the journey.
