Considering backing a project? - Here are the questions backers frequently ask:
How does the funding work?
Each campaign comes with a crowd funding target and deadline. By buying rewards in a project, you contribute to crowd funding the project and make it happen.
What do I get in return for backing a project?
Each campaign brings its own unique reward. To find out what’s on offer, check our Projects page.
Do I need a PayPal account to back a project?
No. Our campaigns are set up to accept credit and debit card payments and do not necessitate a PayPal login or account.
To pay by credit card: once you’ve reached PayPal’s checkout page, just click on the second tab ‘Pay with a credit or debit card’. We accept all major credit and debit cards from 190 countries.
I'm not bothered about rewards, can I just donate?
Yes, you can simply donate by clicking the ‘no reward’ option. This option is visible on each campaign page after hitting the green ‘Back this project’ button.
Can I back a project anonymously?
Yes, the backer’s username is the only data publicly displayed on the site. Choose a generic username (e.g. john4322) in order to donate anonymously.
I'm skint, can I help in other ways?
Yes, sharing a campaign’s link on social media is a highly effective way of helping the project you like. You may use the sharing widgets available on each campaign page to spread the word about your favourite project.
Can I cancel my account?
You can cancel your account as long as you have not raised or contributed any money. Accounts that have raised or contributed money must remain active. Contact us to cancel your account or campaign.
Is there any risk?
While Sponsume makes every effort to ensure that project creators honour their commitments, our site is a platform and project creators are fully responsible for delivering the promised rewards. Project owners who fail to fulfill their obligations expose themselves to damages to their reputation and credit rating, fines, and may face legal action.
Are contributions tax deductible?
-
Australia: contributions are only tax deductible if the project holds DGR (Deductible Gift Recipient) status.
-
New Zealand: Sponsume does not have charitable organisation status. However, if the project creator is a charity or donee organisation, it is up to them to provide tax deductible receipts and manage the record keeping.
-
UK: crowdfunding generally does not qualify for Gift Aid as it involves offering rewards in exchange for donations. The general principle is that only donations for which nothing material is promised in return may qualify for Gift Aid.
-
US: campaigns may offer tax deductions on contributions only if they are set up as a 501©(3) non-profit and only receive funds into their non-profit PayPal account.
