The Vacuum Cleaner is an honest and courageous piece of theatre exploring the relationship between the performers and the audience. It juggles expectations, fears, stereotypes, notions of artificiality, self-criticism and humour. Written specifically for the cast, the play embraces the real truths and limitations of the performer. The piece was developed by seven members of Ferodo Bridges, Platform for Artistic Collaboration, in a non-theatrical space, an abandoned courtroom. Rehearsing through the winter, with no heating, proper lighting or even coffee, the company struggled with a hostile environment and financial limitations. Through discussions and workshops exploring these failures, limitations flourished into possibilities, and The Vacuum Cleaner was developed.
A playful and surprisingly moving meta-theatrical comedy which seeks to place the audience in the here and now, challenging expectations of theatre and the performer. The Vacuum Cleaner has been designed to be adapted to any space and audience, the text alters with each performance resulting in a fresh and dynamic piece which aims to engage the audience in a new and exciting way.
The Vacuum Cleaner was performed twice and greeted with standing ovations. That encouraged the group to develop the show further and to take it to Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Each member of the company passionately believes that this show is an important development for today's theatre.
How You Can Help
This is where you come in. We have taken a risk and booked a venue in Edinburgh, and now we desperately need the funds to pay for the venue and our accommodation and travel, so please donate anything you can!
