Survival of the Fittest at Edinburgh Fringe 2013

Edinburgh, GB

Hey peeps,

I have been dancing for most of my life, having the opportunity to work with well established choreographers and events, including London 2012 Olympics Closing Ceremony. After choreographing for a few companies, I decided it was about time to take a giant leap of faith as an independent choreographer and performer, forming MonixArts. And here it is: after a successful premiere in January at Resolution!, MonixArts is taking it up a notch by performing its new double bill at Edinburgh Fringe 2013.

So whoever will be in Edinburgh the first two weeks of August, we would love to see you as part of our audience at Sweet Venues, Grassmarket.

Even better, get a free ticket  by showing your support and backing our project!

The Project

Survival of the Fittest is an energetic double bill of contemporary dance combined with martial arts. Conflict and confrontation, where the dancers engage in a dynamic and athletic choreography. Acquired behaviour and natural impulses take the frontline for our two works "Nu.V.Na" and "Fight or Flight".
Nu.V.Na - Violence. Four dancers pushed to their extremes, capturing the physical and emotional struggle, when instinct and acquired behaviour clash to maintain control. Contemporary fused with martial arts. It’s “Nurture Versus Nature”.
Fight or Flight - Instinct in its rawest form comes down to two things: Fight or Flight. Taking inspiration from the wildlife, we look to find these characteristics in our everyday life. So when the time comes: Will you fight? Or will you flee in search for refuge?

Collaborators

Composer Zory Burner created the music for short film Downsizing and musical Jesus Christ: The challenge of Love. Her song "More than any kind of Love" was in top 3 on Amazing Tunes top 10 chart and UK Unsinged Top 40 Chart (Tour Dates). All dancers are highly skilled, training in schools including Laban, Northern School of Contemporary Dance and Italia Conti. They have worked with a range of choreographers to name a few James Wilton, Ben Duke and Darren Ellis.

The company

MonixArts is a London-based contemporary dance company, led by Monica Nicolaides. The company’s work approaches contemporary dance as a means of expressing the status of issues and relationships in current society. Working with how the human body moves in space and investigating the nature of human behaviour, we aim to create highly quality contemporary dance works, using influences from other movement styles and everyday life to create an identifiable and unique movement vocabulary.

Why fund us?

MonixArts is asking you to help us cover costs for Edinburgh Fringe. This fund is only a small part of the money we need to make this project real. I am investing a big chunk of my own money, hence am even more determined to ensure this does become a success! My dancers are basically working for free (as am I) because they believe in the quality of the work and the company. Survival of the Fittest will ensure that MonixArts has a future.
It's dance finding ways to relate to everyday life. A bit of action, a bit of risk, a bit of challenge, a bit of humour.
And on the plus side, by supporting us you get rewards! Check it out
What this will cover in the budget
Posted: Sunday, 14 April, 2013 - 19:04

After a few days of sunshine and some fantastic weather in London (Hoping not to jinx it!), I had some time to go over things and thought it would be best to give you a little bit more detail about what this money will help do:

Below, you will see our full budget:

Accommodation: £1200

Travel Expenses: £600

Per Diems (6 dancers): £1020

Theatre: £2400

Rehearsal Space; £700

-----------------------------

TOTAL: £5920

This project will only cover a fraction of our costs and that is all we need. Just a little bit of help to cover essentials. Most of the costs will be covered by myself and some from the box office takings. We know it is though times for everyone, and we understand that you may not be able to contribute to this project. So if you cant support us financially, we only ask you to spread the word to friends and family.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.
