We are a passionate group of vintage computer and video game collectors who wish to create a Museum in the Wynyard Quarter in Auckland.
We have the support of major patrons and organisations such as Steve Wozniak (co-founder of Apple), The Institute of IT Professionals (formerly the New Zealand Computer Society) and Auckland University Computer Science Department. Woz has said if we can get this off the ground he will attend the launch and host a lunch with major contributors and sponsors. This means we will need to plan our launch around his schedule, but we have already begun the process with his wife Janet and Agent Amy.
We have a board of advisers coming together and potential sponsorship from a number of organisations.
The crowd funding campaign is to raise money for further development of the project proposal, putting together a project team, sponsorship proposals, designing the Museum layout and the acquisition / restoration of several key exhibits plus the rewards. We are not trying to pay for everything upfront, but envisage the money raised will get us far enough to excite and entice sponsorship / investment to fund the full project. In total probably several millions will eventually be required but this doesn’t all need to come from you.
Our goal is to open in the next 12-18 months and we will keep all our contributors engaged with a monthly email newsletter, online forum and regular 'town meetings' you are all encouraged to participate in. We don't expect you to just give us some cash! We would like your cash AND your input and feedback as our plans coalesce and develop.
The museum will have continually evolving exhibits, both from our collections and others. We would like to create a space that invites, informs and stimulates. Regular guest speakers and events will provide a dynamic schedule to keep people coming back. Combining large open spaces and a cafe / bar with smaller dynamically themed spaces that can accommodate exhibitions and events. You will be able to pop in for a quick coffee & wander in the morning, a byte at lunch (sorry couldn't resist that) or maybe to catch a speaker and a drink in the evening! Non-member entry will be single digits, members will be free.
Membership will provide unlimited access, discounted space hire and opportunities to get involved in restoration, exhibitions and regular member events including special speakers such as Woz and other luminaries of IT, innovation and gaming. We are planning to have a full workshop for restoration and members will be able to use this on member nights to restore their own pieces.
If you are a potential sponsor, or just want to give us an idea, opportunity or your opinion then please drop me an email at
We will collect, curate, restore, educate and do it with a spirit of energy and fun!
If this vision 'clicks' with you then we would love to have you on board so please contribute!
Plus everyone who contributes will go in the draw to WIN an additional place at the lunch with Woz and the launch party!
