This summer, Vignette is turning its sights on Puccini’s masterpiece La bohéme. With its devastating story and achingly beautiful music, this production will challenge and enchant, unsettle and inspire.
We are passionate about telling stories using songs and music. That is what we believe opera is and all it needs to be. We don't go in for expensive tickets and posh frocks. We don't have red velvet seats (in fact in this production, the audience will spend most of their time on their feet following the action round the warehouse.) We do go in for brilliant singing and excellent acting, clever design and providing a great night out at the theatre.
We're delighted to be back in the Village Underground in Shoreditch, London. This is an unusual venue for opera (our set build begins the second that the rave the previous evening finishes). It is a great place to explode the notions of what opera is and can be. The building will help us tell the story of 2 pairs of lovers, trying to find their way through jealousy and betrayal against the backdrop of poverty and disease.
This fresh look at Puccini's masterpiece will be set in a modern post-apocalyptic Paris. The threat of disease is a hangover from the war in the form of a highly contagious weaponised virus.
We need your help to make this possible. Opera, however you squeeze it, is expensive. We want to give our performers the best possible launch into the professional world. We want as many people to see it as possible - especially those who think Opera is boring and for rich people. We want to keep the ticket prices as low as we can and keep the standards as high as we can.
Songs in a room - but great, great songs.
