Ah Dinnae Ken: Stories of Scottish Identity

Edinburgh, GB

Who We Are

Hello there! We are a team postgraduate publishing students at Edinburgh Napier University who are currently working on a live book project for Merchiston Publishing, the in-house publishing arm of Edinburgh Napier University and the Scottish Centre for the Book. Merchiston Publishing is a not-for-profit publishing house which distributes copies of its books freely, and is supported by the generous donations of organizations such as the Edward Clark Trust.

Our Project

What does it mean to be Scottish? Can Scottishness be defined, and is there really a difference between Scotland and the rest of the UK? Some of today’s leading Scottish authors for young adult literature – Cathy MacPhail, Claire McFall, Diana Hendry, J.A. Henderson, Matthew Fitt, Cathy Forde, and others – address these questions and more, in this thought-provoking collection of stories about national identity. Each story is unique, some are amusing, others moving, but together they show how different people, ideas, and even dialects make up the Scotland we know and love today. The book also features a foreword by Scottish journalist and broadcaster Stuart Cosgrove.

However, Merchiston Publishing relies on external funding, and as such we are only able to produce a small number of copies of Ah Dinnae Ken. In order for us to increase our print run and distribute as widely as possible, we need more money! Our current funding would allow us to distribute thirty copies of the book to ten schools, but we hope to increase that number to at least sixteen schools. For each £5 raised we hope to print an extra 2 books but, as they say, 'every little bit helps' so please donate whatever you can to allow us to reach more schools and more teenagers with this exciting and educational collection!

We would very much appreciate any contribution you are able to make to help us achieve our goal! Contributor bonuses can be viewed to the right, in the sidebar, and thank you very much for your support in our project!

The finishing line is in sight! With only two weeks to go and our loveley backers have taken us to 68% of our target goal.

While their generosity has been apparent on this page, we have been busy behind the scenes promoting Ah Dinnae Ken at the London Book Fair and finalising the all important cover designs. We can confirm seven contributors to the project, our brilliant writers; Claire McFall, J A Henderson, Cathy McPhail, Diana Hendry, and Matthew Fitt. We also have our foreword writer, the multi-talented Stuart Cosgrove.

If you would like to see this exciting project go ahead, donate and tell all your friends!

Your enthusiasm and involvement have made us even more motivated to go on with this amazing project, and we even spoke to STV about Ah Dinnae Ken! We are really looking forward to seeing this book out and about in Scottish schools.

A huge thank you from the Merchiston Team! Keep your eyes open for more updates.
